When Older Is Not Always Better

Cognitive development may be a lifelong endeavor and may reflect the brain’s plasticity. The study of adult neural plasticity is quickly changing the way scientists think about the adult brain. Experiences can increase, decrease, or modify synapses and dendritic spines in adults. However, studies of brain-damaged laboratory animals and clinical studies of brain damage in humans indicate that as people get older, this process begins to slow down. Older adult brains still demonstrate plasticity, but at a slower and more limited pace. This research will be explored further in the section on learning.

The case of Genie and other similar cases highlight the importance of receiving stimulation at sensitive and critical times. Plasticity is a reality in the human brain, but it is restricted by time, as are all things.
